Neuroimaging the association between alcohol use and dementia Lead Investigator: Simon Zhornitsky Institution : Yale E-Mail : simon.zhornitsky@yale.edu Proposal ID : 1559 Proposal Description: Epidemiological studies suggest that excessive drinking and life-time alcohol use are associated with the risk of dementia. Previous neuroimaging studies found increased brain atrophy among individuals with a history of alcohol misuse. In the present study, we will examine whether age-related changes in the brain vary with alcohol use and cognitive impairment in dementia. The specific objective of this research is to test the hypothesis that cerebral volume would be negatively related to drinking severity and that brain findings would mediate the inter-relationship between alcohol use and cognitive status.
